Toastmasters Speech #5 Body Language
Title: Saying Thank You to your No’s
Intro: Life is like a bag of fortune cookies. You never know what your future holds. Because you don’t know your future, Many of us struggle in life. Rather than having your head down with disappointment, Thomas will explain why you should keep your head up and boldly say Thank You
Don’t you hate it when someone tells you no? Disappointment can be a very big let down. I mean it really hurts when you are told no or denied something. We all have disappointments in some shape or form. We didn’t get that promotion in our job, you got cut in baseball team.
Now the difference is how you deal with these no’s and how you overcome them.
Like my intro says, there are many different fortunes in a bag of fortune cookies. Just how are you going to live your life?
The Pessimistic person will say, life can be a bag of fortune cookies. You will never know the answer.
Now the optimistic person will say, Life is like a bag of fortune cookies, but Forget about the fortune because I already know what my future holds.
You know your life is already written?
You don’t know it, because you haven’t lived it yet, But what if you knew exactly what your future holds? If you knew that you was going to finally get that dream job in 3 months, but you will be denied 10 times before you get it. If you knew this, then you would say, Thank you, I’m just 9 more no’s to go.
I’m one more step to VICTORY!
One of the greatest inventions in history was the invention of the light bulb. It’s probably 2nd best invention right under the invention of the Wheel. Light is so important because enables people to work and live in darkness. It improves productivity, reduces crime, and the special Club lights make everyone look attractive in a night club.
Did you know it took Thomas Edison over 10,000 experiments before he found the perfect formula to make the light bulb? One bold newspaper reporter asked Edison if he felt like a failure and why he didn’t just give up.. Edison replied, “Young man, why would I feel like a failure? And why would I ever give up? I now know definitively over 9,000 ways that an electric light bulb will not work. Success is almost in my grasp.” And shortly after that, and over 10,000 attempts, Edison invented the light bulb.
“Many of life’s failures are people who did not realize how close they were to success when they gave up”
Every time you see a no, say thank you! One step closer to Victory
Like most of the world Japan was hit very hard on the great depression in the 1930’s. There was a young Japanese college student who was working on a better car engine. He wanted to create a new type of invention that he will eventually sell it to Toyota. After working day and night for years he finally came up with a new plan and presented it to Toyota. They laughed and ridiculed him by saying it will never work. Well after two more years he presented it to Toyota and they agreed to give him a contract. Now Japan at the time was starting to gear up for War. All the resources was getting used up for the war and he was having a difficult time building a new factory to start creating his new type of engine. But he still didn’t quit. He invented a new way of using concrete and it helped in build the factory. Now Americans started to drop bombs and destroyed his factory and it also caused a huge shortage of steel. He still didn’t quit. He grabbed all of the empty bomb shells and gasoline cans and used them as raw materials to build engines. He called them “Gifts from President Truman”. Now the war was devastating to the car industry in Japan. Most people ended up walking or riding bicycles. So he decided to scale down and created a small engine to connect to bicycles. This was a boom and after the War he was leading in all Motorcycle production. This man started a company that still lives strong today. His name was Soichiro Honda.
He experienced Tremendous setbacks and was denied many times.
Say thank you to your no’s. Your one step closer to Victory.
There is this story about a young girl who was borned abandoned by her 13 year old mother because of a result of being raped. Luckily she was adopted by a family, but this family was very dysfunctional. They was always cruel, irresponsible, and physically abusive for over 15 years. She was forced to do drugs and was in and out of jail. Now you would think that this person will never amount to anything and probably will not even live to the age of 18 years old.
Guess what this is Oprah Winfrey’s childhood history. She refused to allow her past to dictate her future. She used those No’s and setbacks as fuel to keep her motivated. Many people that she would end up interviewing was comforted because she knew exactly how they felt. She was that person. She experienced grief and problems.
She said thank you for her no’s and got closer to victory!
There is probably thousands if not a millions of these similar stories. Some of you could probably talk about your successes as well. I really want everyone here to know that there is victory in your life.. Success is getting closer and closer from every No’s that are said to you.
There is always a huge story for every success. You really need to know how to cope with your no’s and failures before you are able to get the Yes you want. There is no such thing as a free lunch. There is always a huge price to pay before getting success.
There was a great movie called “Big Fish”. It’s a story about a young boy who reliving his father’s amazing stories. Well one of the stories was he was drafted to the Military during World war 1. He wanted to take all the risky assignments so he can get home quicker. During the war he did all these amazing heroic stuff. He didn’t do this because he was careless, but reason he did it because when he was younger he knew exactly how he was going to die. And it wasn’t going to happen in the war. He took that knowledge and was fearless!
You already know what your future holds. It was already told to you, you just have to believe and have faith in it.
That was my point in my introduction. If you knew exactly how many no’s until victory then you need to take that knowledge and become fearless.
Say thank you to those no’s
